Guardians Capture Bantam A Title in Shoot-out
The gutsy Guardians are the 2016 DJHL Bantam A Champions thanks to a thrilling 5-4 shoot-out victory over the first-place RBC General at Bussey Horwood Arena. It was a storybook ending to an injury-plagued campaign for the Guardians, who used more alternate players than anyone during the regular season. Dylan Yee opened the scoring early for the Generals, with help from Garrett Mills and James Wickham. Ethan Moore, a steady sniper all play-offs, replied for the Guardians (assisted by twin brother Nick Moore and Jack O'Dea). Tallies by Yee (his second assisted again by Mills and Wickham), Riley Best (from Austen Martin), and Mills (from Yee and George Walsh) gave the Generals a commanding 4-1 lead in the middle frame. Then the Guardians began their climb back. Nick Moore made it 4-2 on a set-up from O'Dea and Keegan Hynes, and Ethan Moore got his second snipe on a play with Hynes and brother Nick. With six minutes to play, Ryan Howlett scored to tie the game at 4-4. O'Dea earned his third assist of the night on the big moment and Devon O'Keefe also assisted. The overtime shoot-out hero was AJ Joyce, nicknamed the No Quit Kid by DJHL Hockey News for his desire to still return after two collar bone injuries took away most of his season. Joyce fired home the deciding goal in the shoot-out to seal the deal for the Guardians. For the Boys in Green, especially players like Joyce and Ian Poole, back for his first game since a December injury of his own, it was a well-deserved victory over a very strong Generals squad.
